Can you use roofing tar paper???

Hello, I am a tile contractor. I have heard you can use roofing felt tar paper as an inexpensive crack isolation membrane over concrete slabs. Are there any pros out there that recommend this method?

I have a couple of problems with the tar paper. 1. Bonding to the substrate 2. Bonding the tile to the tar paper. I have only used tar paper as a vapor barrier under a deep bed installation. I really am not certain of the elastic properties of tar paper for crack isolation. I have installed for companies that use inexpensive vinyl for crack suppression. I have not seen any failures with vinyl.

No, do not use tar paper. This is recommended against by the National Tile Contractors Association (NTCA) and fails the ANSI A118.12 standard for crack isolation membranes for thin-set ceramic tile and dimensional stone products.

Michael and Del,  I appreciate your time.  Sounds like tar paper is out.   What is the least expensive crack isolation membrane that you recommend?  Thanks.

Check you local flooring distributer. There are rolls of mineral paper that are very inexpensive along with the membrane glue.
